Springback Assembly in Budapest

3 October 2024

Springback held an Assembly in Budapest (HR), from 26-29 September, for a twenty three strong group of our international writers and thinkers. Their discussions focused on the complexities of translation, both literal and metaphorical, and dissecting their counties’ different political systems in the looming shadow of the rise of the far-right within our democracies.

Curated by Springback writer Lena Megyeri and hosted by the Workshop Foundation the participants also dipped into the local dance scene seeing performances by; Catherine Gaudet’s company at Trafó House, Beatrix Simkó’s #Orfeus #Eurydice at MU Theatre, with an after-show talk moderated by Springback writer Beatrix Joyce, and Artus performance of The Wind Gate Location at the National Dance Theatre, preceded by a guided tour of the new building by its managing director Peter Ertl. Former Aerowaves artist Gergő D. Farkas also presented an overview of the political and artistic situation in Hungary and Springback writer Ingeborg Zackariassen shared some of the results of some recent research she undertook examining the arts funding cuts in Sweden.

The group also visited organisations resident in the Workshop Foundation: The Symptoms (https://thesymptoms.hu/), watching a rehearsal of their upcoming performance, and learnt about the historic independent arts magazine Színház from its editor Noémi Hevczog www.szinhaz.net

Not forgetting that their business is movement they participated in a dance jam guided by Gyula Cserepes and a morning movement session lead by Springback writer and dancer Francesc Nel·lo Deakin. A last highlight was a music mystery tour around historical Budapest with musician historian and stand up comedian Ádám Bősze.

As an outcome of the Assembly, Springback Magazine will publish a special supplement

Thanks so much to the Workshop Foundation and for hosting the Assembly’s activities!
