For the starting point for this interdisciplinary solo performance, Courtney May Robertson (Scotland, 1992) takes the controversial sport of ‘horse taming’ as a metaphor for self-restraint. She explores the friction between embracing one’s untamed desires and regulating behaviour in accordance with societal pressures. Visual projections encapsulate Courtney within an octagon spanning 4m in diameter. Through a patchwork of poetry, dance, and song, she sprints across landscapes of cravings, memories, and conflicts. The space becomes a time capsule; inmate home videos are spliced with eclectic imagery ripped from YouTube and documentary archives. the pleasure of stepping off a horse when it’s moving at full speed is Courtney’s courageous attempt to embrace the, sometimes messy, contradictions that make up a multi-faceted human.
