Spring Forward 2023 – watch what we got up to!

Watch | 11 October 2023

During Spring Forward in Dublin, we made videos of all the activities that take place alongside the festival programme. These are part of our commitment to fostering opportunities for the next generation of dance professionals in Europe.

Artists’ Encounter, local dance makers

This year we started a new programme: Artists’ Encounter. Ten local dance makers were selected through an open call, they attended a workshop on how to collaborate internationally and joined the guests to follow the festival schedule.

The professional development workshop was led by Anikó Rácz, Director of SIN Arts Centre, Hungary. It focused on working in an international context and career development. As well as watching all the shows, the participants also attended the supplementary programme of events throughout.

Springback Academy, aspiring dance writers

Springback Academy has been running since 2014. Each year 10 emerging dance writers, selected through an open call, are mentored by professional journalists in the art of quality dance criticism. They attend a workshop in writing about dance, see all the shows and write reviews which are edited by the mentors. The participants get hands on experience and the artists get a critique of their work. It’s a win win! These writers then go on to write for our online publication springbackmagazine.com

Startup Forum, emerging curators

Overseen by Betsy Gregory, former Artistic Director of Dance Umbrella in the UK, the participants of Startup Forum are mentored by Betsy and four Aerowaves partners. They follow the programme and meet each day to discuss what they’ve seen; after the festival they are invited to propose a project for their local context which involves the Aerowaves artists. Three are selected and receive a grant of €10k. Find out more about the Startup Forum Awards.

Artists and partners buddy up at Spring Forward festival

Presenting work at Spring Forward can be a daunting experience when there are so many international promoters present. Therefore each artist is matched with an Aerowaves partner to help them navigate their Spring Forward experience. From being a supportive voice to making introductions, having a buddy makes a big difference!
