Dan Kinzelman // Performer and composer

After earning an Honors degree in jazz at the University of Miami in 2004, Dan Kinzelman moved to Europe and to Italy where he has been living since 2005. He quickly embraced the Italian scene, joining the band of Italian trumpet legend Enrico Rava and collaborating with emerging talents of his own generation such as Giovanni Guidi, Simone Graziano and William Tatge.

His work is characterised by a strongly irreverent streak, combined with a profound knowledge of jazz history and a voracious appetite for risk and sonic exploration.

In the last year he began a collaboration with Italian choreographer Daniele Ninarello, leading to a debut performance this year at the Biennale di Venezia with the project ‘Kudoku’. The collective trio Hobby Horse’s 5th record was released to widespread critical acclaim in May 2016, and starting in November he will be part of the faculty of Siena Jazz, Italy’s oldest and most prestigious jazz school. He is currently hard at work writing music for new records with Hobby Horse and Dan Kinzelman’s Ghost, and for a new dance project with Ninarello slated to debut in 2017.
