Summer ReCollection festival in Ljubljana

We kicked off our celebrations of Aerowaves’ 25 years with a flash festival in Ljubljana from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 June. This is a very significant place for Aerowaves since we celebrated the first Spring Forward festival there ten years ago. The centre of the event was again with our partners EN-KNAP Productions at Španski Borci Cultural Centre with five other venues, indoors and out.

Summer ReCollection had us dancing in the streets through a history of Aerowaves choreographers according to Bal Moderne on Saturday night before the performance of Cinderella’s – overlooked by the castle and the full moon. The programme also included eleven live performances of Aerowaves Artists from the years 2020 and 2021.

We also be launched the pioneering project Springback Ringside with three current works in VR, the print edition Springback Magazine Annual with ‘Aerowaves at 25’ supplement, and a video installation that recollects a quarter of a century of dance across europe.

Due to safety measures, we were only allowed a limited number of seats for international places. However, Springback Magazine’s Be There with Springback Social! we brought you behind the scenes interviews, convivial walks, rehearsals and a delicious taste of Ljubljana.

Live Performances

Eleven artists from the Twenty20 and Twenty21 selections presented their performances in Ljubljana: Alessandro Carboni with ‘The Angular Distance of a Celestial Body’, Viktor Černický with ‘PLI’, Tereza Lenerová with ‘Don’t Stop’, Masako Matsushita with ‘UN/DRESS | moving painting’, Anne-Mareike Hess with ‘Warrior’, Anastasia Valsamaki with ‘Body Monologue’, Alexandros Stavropoulos with ‘Cinderellas’, Máté Mészáros with ‘Mechanics of Distance’, Moritz Ostruschnjak with ‘Tanzanweisungen (it won't be like this forever)’, Emese Cuhorka & Csaba Molnár with ‘MASTERWORK’ and Poliana Lima with ‘Things Move but they do not say anything’.

International launch of Springback Ringside

Enya Belak and Igor Crnković (Pilot Media) together with some of our partners and artists have been researching the possibilities of filming dance in Virtual Reality as a way of documenting work – as opposed to creating work specially for this technology. Far from trying to replace physical and live performance, the project is driven by the question: can we feel kinetic empathy through VR? We are testing this question with EN-KNAP and Španski Borci Cultural Centre (Ljubljana, Slovenia) as our lead partner, the Croatian Cultural Centre (Rijeka, Croatia), Tanec Praha (Prague, Czech Republic) and The Place (London, UK).

We launched this project internationally at Summer ReCollection presenting: ‘Ruins’ by Rhys Dennis & Waddah Sinada / FUBUNATION, ‘Babae’ by Joy Alpuerto Ritter and ‘BEAT ‘I just wish to feel you’ by Collective Dope – Jenna Jalonen.

Cinderella’s Bal Moderne at Congress Square

We celebrated past and present works of Aerowaves artists with Cinderella’s Bal Moderne, a chance to experience the work of Aerowaves artists directly, in your own flesh!

In Ljubljana we invited everyone, from throughout the whole city, to gather at the Congress square to learn 4 short (between 3 and 4 minutes) choreographies tailor-made for the occasion by former and current Aerowaves artists, who will also guide the participants. Each dance takes around 30 minutes to master and is taught in an atmosphere of concentrated fun, totally unlike a conventional dance class or a fashionable discotheque.

At the Bal we danced: ‘Codesa’ by George Mxolisi Khumalo’, ‘Coeur d’Artichaut’ by Frédéric Werlé, Jurij Konjar’s ‘Algo De Mi’ and Alexandros Stavropoulos’ Cinderella’s.

Don’t worry you can Be There with Springback Social (Fri 25 - Sun 27 June). For our friends and dance enthusiasts who will not be in Ljubljana for Summer ReCollection, we are devising a series of video snippets to follow the jam-packed action of the festival.

Presented by Springback writer Beatrix Joyce, Springback Social (on Springback Magazine’s Facebook and Instagram @springbackmagazine) will bring to your screens behind the scenes interviews, convivial walks, rehearsals and a delicious taste of Ljubljana.
