Biography
Marta Cerqueira has been a professional dancer since 2001. She graduated from the National Conservatory Dance School in Lisbon, and has a solid background in classical and modern dance. She also trained in several dance schools and studios in New York –thanks to a scholarship from IPAI–, Berlin and Lisbon, where she completed the Choreography Course of the Calouste Gulbenkian PGCCA Foundation.
From an early age, she has shown an interest in multidisciplinary approaches COLINA04 (PT), Point to Pointe Program, 4th Asia- Europe Dance Forum/06 (PL). She has worked with several choreographers and directors with which she has co-created and performed pieces presented in Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Poland, Greece, Lebanon, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Scotland, Canada, Argentina and Brazil.
Cerqueira has collaborated with several renowned Portuguese artists such as Sofia Dias & Vítor Roriz, Alexandro Farto/Vhils, Marlene Monteiro Freitas and Tânia Carvalho. And she has worked in films directed by Jeanne Waltz, Manuel Guerra, Kamila Chomicz, Tiago Guedes and Frederico Serra.
Marta Cerqueira also explores formats close to the visual arts, especially in the context of Dança de Materiais Inertes (2016 – 2020), a collection of installations and shows that she developed in partnership with the pianist and composer Simão Costa. As a choreographer, she takes a keen interest in composition practice, applied not only to the human body but also to other materials.
